ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION AT CFA BANGHOLME TRAINING GROUND – 3 May 2011

VFBV has been briefed on the discovery of sheet asbestos contamination in some garden beds and a small area of the off road track that is under construction at CFA’s Bangholme Training Complex in Carrum Downs.

Garden beds and the initial earth works for the off road track that were undertaken in mid-2010 involved the trucking in of soil that has been revealed to have contained a quantity of sheet asbestos.

CFA has been decisive in the immediate suspension of all training and administrative activities on the site and the staff have been relocated pending an investigation and report by a hygienist.

Testing and evaluation of the level of contamination are ongoing and WorkSafe has been notified as per normal reporting mechanisms.

Planning is well advanced and the safe removal and disposal of the offending contamination is programmed to take place during next week. CFA is providing advice to all users of the site as to the level of contamination and the actions, precautions and reporting that will take place, to ensure all personnel who may have come into contact with the material or been at the site are fully briefed on the next steps.

VFBV will continue to monitor the situation and expects to receive a further briefing from CFA once the report from the hygienist is available.

Affected brigades and concerned volunteers should make their first contact with their Catchment Officer or enquiries with their Regional Office.

Asbestos Warning

Please ensure that we all remain aware when working in areas where buildings have been destroyed, crews are conscious of checking for the existence of asbestos and taking the appropriate precautions (PPE).

Asbestos has the potential to be extremely harmful to health and should be treated in such a way.

If there are any doubts about the existence of asbestos or how to deal with it, please seek advice.
